About the Film
In the small coastal haven of Belize lies the longest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere—a UNESCO World Heritage Site that sustains over half the country’s population. Despite its protected status, the reef faces mounting threats from overfishing, oil exploration, invasive species, coastal development, and climate change. Wealth Untold offers a revealing look at the conservation efforts led by Belizean women—scientists, artists, and policymakers—whose shared vision empowers local communities to thrive in harmony with the marine environment.
In 2023, the Mesoamerican Reef Fund approved a Belize Marine Fund project grant to the International Documentary Association to help produce Wealth Untold. The project contributes to the effective marketing of Belize’s reef at national and international levels.
The project was implemented by Eclectic Aspirations, an independent film production company founded in 2016 by Eladio Arvelo. The company creates uplifting documentaries that showcase inspiring human stories from around the world.
